There are a lot of people out there who would like you to follow their advice, a favorite politician, a miracle diet, or some strange spiritual teaching. But do they have the evidence to back up their claims? I don’t think they do. However, there is evidence out there that can point you in the right direction.

1. Big Bang Theory

All things must have a beginning and that includes the universe. The universe is expanding outward. Scientists believe this means the universe started in one small spot and that “spot” suddenly appeared in a great singularity (one of a kind event). For time and space to suddenly appear, something (or someone) outside of space and time would be needed to bring space and time into existence.

2. The Fine Tuning of the Universe

Life on our planet is precious and only exists here in the universe. For life to exist on the Earth, there are many things that need to be in place. Our location in the universe, the type of galaxy we are in, the size of our sun and moon, the size of the other planets in our solar system, the force of gravity, the light that reaches our planet, the qualities of water—all these need to be just right for life on our planet to exist. It looks like all of these things were fine-tuned to allow life to flourish on this planet.

3. The Cell

How can life come from non-living material? Even the best lab experiments cannot create life from non-living material. And the most basic life form, the simple cell, turns out to be far too complex to have come together by itself. From the cell’s outer membrane, its organelles and nucleus, the level of sophistication suggests design rather than chance.

4. DNA

DNA is the code of life. It gives the cell information to make a new cell. This information has a 4-letter code (A, C, G, T) and its many different combinations can determine anything from the color of your eyes to how tall you will be. Some have compared this information to the material contained in an encyclopedia! The likelihood that all this information randomly came together just to make the simplest cell is impossible. Technical information implies a designer.

5. Jesus of Nazareth Was Crucified and Died

Most serious scholars accept as a historical fact that Jesus was crucified and died. Crucifixion was a common Roman execution method. Many writers from long ago (like Josephus, Tacitus, Lucian of Samosata, and the Talmud) report that Jesus was crucified. All four Gospel writers say the ordeal of crucifixion killed Jesus. And this should be easy to accept when one thinks about how terrible crucifixion was.

6. The Empty Tomb

Other religions can go to the grave of their founder and know there is a body in it. Not Christians. Jesus’ tomb is empty (Matthew 28:6). The early followers of Jesus found His tomb empty as did the Roman and Jewish leaders. Jesus’ tomb was empty because He rose from the dead, just as He said He would. And Jesus appeared to many people after He died on the cross. This helped them to believe He was the Son of God.

7. Eyewitnesses

If many people said they saw and heard the same thing, that makes a strong argument that what they saw and heard happened. There are many early witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus. All four Gospel writers in the New Testament (Matthew 28:1-7, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24:1-11 and John 20:1-29) report that Jesus died and was seen alive again. Peter, an early follower of Jesus, also says that he saw Jesus after He had died on the cross. These witnesses never changed their story. And many of them were arrested and put to death because they kept telling people about Jesus and His resurrection.

8. Enemy Testimony

Paul, originally called Saul, did not like the church. He was a part of the group that killed Stephen, one of the first martyrs. Paul then headed to Damascus to arrest Christians. On his way, he saw a blinding light and then saw Jesus (Acts 9:1-9). He became a follower of Jesus and wrote many of the letters that make up the New Testament.

9. The Early Church

The first followers of Jesus started in Jerusalem and spread around the world. They wrote letters and books, some of which we still have today. In these writings, they talked about their faith in Jesus as the Son of God, risen from the dead, and that our sins are forgiven in Him. This was the same message that is in the Bible. The early Church stayed true to this message and carried it across the globe.

10. Biblical History Confirmed

Archeology investigates the past by digging up its remains and studying them. In the past 200 years, many archeological finds have confirmed the historical record of the Bible. The Black Obelisk records King Jehu paying tribute to another king. The Moabite Stone records King Mesha of Moab as depicted in the Bible. The Merneptah Stele mentions the nation of Israel as far back as 1200 B.C. The Taylor Prism (a clay tablet) describes King Hezekiah’s defense of Jerusalem from Assyrian forces. These are historical objects that confirm the Biblical record.

This is some of the evidence that God is real and that He came to us in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. If you would like to become a Christian, please pray a prayer like this:

“God, I know that I have done things that aren’t good. I believe You sent Jesus to die on the cross for my sins and You raised Him from the dead. I want to place my faith in Jesus as the only One who can forgive my sins and lead me to eternal life. Amen.”

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
